Streaming on Twitch

I've been streaming on Twitch for about four months now and really enjoying it. It's a very different experience than making art in a cafe, in a garden, or alone at home. First of all, it makes you think about what you are going to create. That sounds obvious, but for someone who creates rather intuitively, it's not obvious at all.

In a cafe or garden, I will have curated a bag (sometimes one that looks too big to take on a plane) with a variety of possibilities. Waaayyyy too many possibilities I might add. In those settings, I will switch back and forth between projects willy nilly depending on how the spirit moves me. Or depending on what is happening around me. Or depending on the amount of focus I have that day.

When streaming I prepare for the task or tasks I will work on. Usually, I stream for two hours. So the trick is to find a project that will last two hours or have several to rotate between. For a short stream like two hours, I don't want to get up out of my chair if possible. Leaving the viewer to a stagnant screen is not much fun for them, so I want to have all my materials at my fingertips.

Another difference is that streaming requires talking and lots of it! I am known to mumble to myself as I create, but to be intelligible and coherent, well that's a whole different ball of wax. Talking, engaging with viewers and creating simultaneously is a skillset. Even a talker like me finds their lips drying and their minds turning to mush. So make sure you have a glass of water at the ready.

Benefits that I did not anticipate:

  1. Streaming has helped me to develop a schedule for art and accountability.
  2. My ability to verbalize what I am doing and why is improving. Slowly, perhaps, but improving.
  3. Focus is deepening.
  4. Consistency.

If you would like to see what I am up to I usually stream on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays 2 - 4. On Thursday, Saturday and Sunday I usually stream, but randomly. Tuesdays I take off to get organized. Hope you'll come and check out my stream.
