Recycling Silk Threads into New Yarn

by Lynda Shoupupdated on January 29, 2018November 19, 20176 Comments on Recycling Silk Threads into New Yarn

I’m wondering if this should be the first in a series of posts about how I recycle things most people would throw away. I mean, you probably would. Me? I just can’t let go of certain kinds of materials.  Point in case – these silk threads.  I have been saving them for years. At first, …

  • I made these during my month of experimenting with tea in January. Tea stained paper with ruffles of dried tea bags and a corsage of tea tags. Paired with a napkin ring made from an empty washi tape roll covered in tea bags and embellished with a tea bag bow and organza. #tbt #throwbackthursday #mixedmediaart #tea #tealife #tealove #usewhatyouhave #creativeart
  • Sad to admit that it is the last day of #mendmarch2021 . Here is the travelers bag that @sirfernly created lace in. I had this beautiful floral fabric to cover the holes after mending them. I thought adding the floral sprig made it look like a climbing plant. Couldn’t resist adding some bits and pieces to the front as a centerpiece. It looks like I meant it to be there. At least I hope so. Safe to say this month’s mending has been floral. I like this bag now more than ever. #mendmarch #mend #mending #stitching #stitchbystitch #slowstitching #slowfashion #upcycle #fixyourclothes #usewhatyouhave #useyourscraps #useyourstash #betterthanever #floral
  • On the last day of #mendmarch2021 I am posting a picture of my collaborator - @sirfernly . He chews the holes and I mend them. Here you see him with a bag that has since been mended. Hope to post the finished look later today. The second photo is one of us together. Together with @chasingtheroserabbit we make a great team. #mendmarch #mending #mend #stitching #stitchbystitch #needlework #collaborator #collaborate #rabbit #rabbitsofinstagram #rabbitstagram #rabbitlove #minilop #housebunny #bunnygram #bunnies #bunnylove #うさぎ #bunniesofinstagram #bunnylovers #rabbitsworldwide #bunnyofinstagram #bunniesworldwide
  • Not sure if this is really appropriate for #mendmarch21 . When I saw the prompt for Day 15 - saggy, it made me think of these. When I have a cotton knit item that has gotten stretched out I cut it to pieces and then make the pieces into these cloths. I make them in different sizes and shapes and use the large ones as bath towels, the pink ones for face cloths and the rest for cleaning cloths. Not so much mending and more transformation, but you get the idea. #mendmarch #slowstitching #stitching #stitchbystitch #stitchedbyhand #astitchintime #remake #reuse #upcycle #usewhatyouhave #useitup #repurpose #upcycling #sustainable
  • Mend March - Day 29 prompt - in and out. This one made it to my mending pile and was finished half an hour later. The zipper had separated from the fabric on this spring robe. I first sewed along the 9” or so with pink floss to secure it. Then I could not resist adding some flowers near the bottom in yellow. #mendmarch2021 #mendmarch #mend #mending #fixyourclothes #stitchersofinstagram #stitching #stitchbystitch #sewnbyhand #handsewn #embroidery #embellish #repair
